Francisco Perez was a Private First Class in the U.S. Army’s 76th Infantry Division as a cannoneer and ammo handler. He saw fighting in France and Belgium while under that command, but was later transferred to General Patton’s 3rd Army. With “Patton’s Blood and Guts Army,” Perez served inside and on top tanks where he fired the 50 caliber machine guns. He finally made it into Germany under Patton’s command. After VE Day, Perez changed command once more to General MacArthur’s 1st Cavalry, 25th Infantry Regiment. “I’m proud to have served the United States of America,” says Perez. “Freedom!”
